The Harbour

The last fishermen?

Fishing families have never had it easy. Ever. Since the dawn of time, men have braved wind and storm, flood and drought. Will today be a good catch? Will everyone return healthy to safe harbor? Is a boat still out to sea (buten)? Will our women sell our catch for a good profit at the markets or the trading halls of Luebeck?

Today, as seen in the photos, fish is still sold directly from the cutters in Travemuende.

In compliance to EU regulations, nearly every year the quotas and laws for fishing change, which further complicates the lives of these small family businesses. It is possible that this is the last generation of an ancient livelihood.
